Welcome to Understanding Korea with Dr. Ryu
Welcome to Understanding Korea with Dr. Ryu.
This blog is designed to help international readers explore Korea in a practical, visual, and thoughtful way. Rather than focusing only on famous attractions or short-term travel, it looks at how people actually live, eat, move, travel, and adapt to change in everyday Korea.
If this is your first visit, you can begin by exploring Korea through six main themes.
Everyday Life in Korea
What does ordinary life in Korea really look like?
This section looks at the small details visitors often notice first: apartments, convenience stores, public transportation, pharmacies, parks, restaurants, kiosks, recycling, and many other parts of daily life that may seem ordinary to Koreans but unfamiliar to visitors.
Food in Korea
Korean food is about much more than famous dishes.
Here, I look at how Koreans order food, share meals, use side dishes, eat at traditional markets, enjoy regional specialties, and navigate everyday restaurant culture. I also pay special attention to foods and dining experiences that may be more comfortable for mature travelers or visitors who prefer less spicy meals.
Travel in Korea
Traveling well is not always about seeing as much as possible.
This section is for readers who want to explore Korea at a comfortable pace. It includes practical information about transportation, walking, rest stops, travel routes, crowds, costs, and ways to enjoy Korea without rushing from one attraction to another.
Stay Longer in Korea
What would it be like to stay in Korea for several weeks or even a few months?
This section explores longer stays, including accommodation, neighborhoods, daily costs, groceries, laundry, transportation, medical services, and the small practical details that become important once a trip becomes more than a short visit.
Korea Now & Then
The Korea you see today is very different from the Korea I remember from earlier decades.
In this section, I compare past and present Korea through homes, transportation, markets, family life, work, education, technology, cities, and everyday habits. Some things have disappeared, some have changed dramatically, and others have remained surprisingly familiar.
Korea Beyond Seoul
There is much more to Korea than Seoul.
This section explores Busan and other cities, coastal areas, historic places, smaller towns, regional food, and local ways of life. Busan, where I live, will naturally appear often, but the goal is to introduce the many different faces of Korea beyond the capital.
For Mature Travelers
This blog pays particular attention to mature international readers.
Walking distance, stairs and slopes, seating, toilets, transportation convenience, meal comfort, medical access, crowds, and the pace of travel can matter just as much as famous attractions. Whenever these practical details are important, I will try to include them.
Want to Understand Korea More Deeply?
For readers who want to go beyond travel and everyday experience, Understanding Korea: 100 Questions explores deeper questions about Korean society, culture, history, education, values, institutions, and social change.

Start Exploring
You do not need to understand everything about Korea before you visit.
Start with what interests you. Look closely. Travel slowly when you can. Notice the small things.
Sometimes, the best way to understand a country begins with an ordinary meal, a subway ride, a neighborhood walk, or a question you had never thought to ask before.
Welcome to Korea.
